The answer might be yes! Alan Savory pioneered efforts to improve pasture health, combat desertification and increase soil carbon storage using frequent movements of large numbers of cattle with his Holistic Planned Grazing (HPG) methods (listen to his TED talk on the subject). This approach has been adopted around the globe by many farmers and ranchers, who have seen dramatic improvements in the health of their land. Our grazing strategy, with frequent moves of the herd from paddock to paddock, is based on this approach. An analysis of the soil carbon sequestration potential worldwide using HPG (view report) suggests that an atmospheric CO2 reduction equivalency of approximately 40 to 100 ppm could be obtained, if these methods were widely applied.
